Consilium Academies’ school Thornhill Academy in Sunderland, which has buildings no longer fit for purpose, is receiving a multimillion-pound overhaul, Yahoo News has reported.
Sunderland City Council approved the proposals, linked to the government's School Rebuilding Programme, which include demolishing parts of the school, building a new teaching block, refurbishing the sports hall, installing a new swimming pool and upgrading outdoor sports facilities including a new football pitch and athletics track.
The application was Submitted by the Department for Education and building firm Willmott Dixon. A representative for Willmott Dixon said the redevelopment would "ensure the school can continue to provide a high standard of education in new, modern fit for purpose accommodation".
The school’s principal Liam Clark told the council the school has had flooding problems and repairs have had to be made to the "substandard facilities" at the school, explaining that the project aims to secure "the very best facilities for the children of Sunderland".
The redevelopment will take place in phases with the new school being delivered first, followed by the demolition of old buildings and the construction of new playing fields.
